"...the tumultuous life and struggles for freedom and survival of Mikela, a young Tanzanian woman of the Maasai tribe... Untangling the chains of her violation and bad memories... Mikela is an epitome of a victim of sexual abuse...her experience speaks for millions of women still treated as objects..."

Mikela is a young and vivacious beauty with a unique artistic talent. Her nightmare starts in the open plains of the Tanzanian Maasailand where she experiences female circumcision. The saga of tradition and ensuing events force Mikela to embark on a blinded journey, one that would eventually take her across two continents.

As she journeys through life, the emotional scar of female circumcision and later rape, continue to haunt Mikela. Scared by her violation and bad memories, Mikela is unsure about her own emotions as her world seems to be spiraling down an endless dark tunnel.

Can Mikela survive the streams of tragedies? Can she overcome the challenges and daily torment by her own life's experiences? Can pure and undefiled love fuel her enough to survive? Is her love for Maasai and Parisian art sufficient to cleanse her mind of the emotional scare of female circumcision and rape?

  • Heart-wrenching, but informative read..
Mikela takes you on an amazing journey of self-preservation and strength. While, as mentioned above, this is not a biography it delves into the trials and tribulations of so many tribal women who must overcome the scars of their youth.

Bringing light to many African countries, the story also reads as a detailed map, giving the reader more than just a passing glance at the places and people Mikela has been introduced to. I found myself going with her on this journey and sharing her enthusiasm for finding freedom beyond the Maasailand in which she was raised.

A heart-wrenching tale of one young woman's battle to escape the ghosts of her past. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the social, political and traditional beliefs of tribal cultures in addition to those who are seeking to escape their own ghosts of the past. Aniagolu-Johnson does a spectacular job portraying the emotions of one voice, in thousands, that sought to break the cycle.
  • While not a biography...
this book reads like one. I had to keep reminding myself it was not actually a story of someone's life. It is a beautiful book telling an enthralling and heartfelt story while also providing insight into the world of a Maasai woman and, hopefully, raising awareness.
  • An empowering life story!
It is amazing how words coming from one heart goes to another heart!
Mikela is a story of hope in a world of unfairness. A story of a little innocent girl forced to the reality of a bold tradition. Mikela takes you with her to the wonderland of Africa, and shows you the beauty of the Maasailand. You then would experience the dark confusion of a child forced to the land of adulthood, experiencing one of the most horrifying extremes of mankind. At the end you would believe that the bright light of faith in self can bring happiness and prosperity to any lost life...
