At the finale of his critically acclaimed first memoir, In Search of Captain Zero, Allan Weisbecker has found his paradise at the end of the road in outback Central America (Pavones, Costa Rica), and is working of the screen adaptation of the book, commissioned by Sean Penn and a major Hollywood studio. Can t You Get Along With Anyone? is the story of Weisbecker s paradise, its underbelly, his fall from grace with the powers that be in Hollywood and the publishing business, plus the near loss of his life due to the writing of the book; he exposes a double murderer and, more dangerously, the love of his life as a sociopath. Interwoven through the various catastrophes that test him on every level, are Weisbecker s reflections on the process of writing the book itself and the nature of nonfiction. Weathering his after-writing throes, writer s queasy gut, and hemorrhaging forehead (from staring at the blank page), Weisbecker maintains his sanity and perspective through his wry, sometimes wildly funny take on his own fears and flaws, and through retreat into the purity of the simple act of riding a wave.

A great read
Allan Weisbecker's newest memoir is a fantastic read, you don't want to miss this one! If you have read his first two books and enjoy his writing (and even if you haven't!) you definitely want to pick this one up. It is very different subject-wise, but has the same great style. The kind of book you just don't want to put down. Something in there everyone can relate to (I think anyways). So don't wait, get it now!

I think there is hope for us...
A great book. While the stories in CYGAWA were fantastic (if a bit too symetrical for "nonfiction") the underlying general philosophy one can take from it (I won't ruin the gradual disclosure) is so crisp, well-thought-out, well-stated and important that the book is no longer a "fantastic story" but an important work. There are few modern-day philosophers. ACW is one - and he understands that, to be one, one must seek and tell the truth, regardless of consequences.

The Answer to the Title is a Resounding NO!
I guess if you have to shoot your dog, man's best friend, maybe you can't get along with anyone.
I read Captain Zero and loved it, but was not much of a fan of Cosmic Bandidos. This one was great - from his cheating girlfriend, to the idiots in Hollywood he has to put up with on movie deals, to the Ticos and expats in Costa Rica who want to kill him. Allan manages to intertwine the "human nature" aspect of his own dysfunctional situations to similar events in the current Bush Administration, to life in general.
it is humorous, witty and dark. And one more thing... don't skip the footnotes.
P.S. If I had a girlfriend like his, I'd have kept the dog and shot her instead.

Very Good Read
Allan is a very gifted writer. It goes to show you that a person doesn't have to be world famous to write a memoir. If they have lead a crazy life like Allan has and can write as well as Allan it's going to be a great book.
I highly recommend it.
