The Apartment
Price: $14.98 USD
Winner* of five 1960 Academy AwardsÂ(r), including Best Picture, The Apartment is legendary writer/director Billy Wilder at his scathing, satirical best, and one of "the finest comedies Hollywood has turned out" (Newsweek). C.C. "Bud" Baxter (Jack Lemmon) knows the way to success in business...it's through the door of his apartment! By providing a perfect hideaway for philandering bosses, the ambitious young employee reaps a series of undeserved promotions. But when Bud lends the key to big boss J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), he not only advances his career, but his own love life as well. For Sheldrake's mistress is the lovely Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), elevator girl and angel of Bud's dreams. Convinced that he is the only man for Fran, Bud must makethe most important executive decision of his career: lose the girl...or his job. *1960: Director, Story and Screenplay, Editing, Art Direction (B&W)
Romance at its most anti-romantic--that is the Billy Wilder stamp of genius, and this Best Picture Academy Award winner from 1960 is no exception. Set in a decidedly unsavory world of corporate climbing and philandering, the great filmmaker's trenchant, witty satire-melodrama takes the office politics of a corporation and plays them out in the apartment of lonely clerk C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon). By lending out his digs to the higher-ups for nightly extramarital flings with their secretaries, Baxter has managed to ascend the business ladder faster than even he imagined. The story turns even uglier, though, when Baxter's crush on the building's melancholy elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) runs up against her long-standing affair with the big boss (a superbly smarmy Fred MacMurray). The situation comes to a head when she tries to commit suicide in Baxter's apartment. Not the happiest or cleanest of scenarios, and one that earned the famously caustic and cynically humored Wilder his share of outraged responses, but looking at it now, it is a funny, startlingly clear-eyed vision of urban emptiness and is unfailingly understanding of the crazy decisions our hearts sometimes make. Lemmon and MacLaine are ideally matched, and while everyone cites Wilder's Some Like It Hot closing line "Nobody's perfect" as his best, MacLaine's no-nonsense final words--"Shut up and deal"--are every bit as memorable. Wilder won three Oscars for The Apartment, for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (cowritten with longtime collaborator I.A.L. Diamond). --Robert Abele

Loftbeds designed for adults - great for everyone! Our loftbeds can support the weight of TWO adults on any size loftbed we offer - this is important because most loftbed plans sold on ebay have an age and or size limit for the user. The exact same design structure we use is good for bunkbeds, twin, twin long, full, queen, and king sizes - we simply have to increase the width but the design is the same. Wood & Bolts: Our plans tell you exactly what wood lengths to buy, bolts needed and suggestions for buying the wood efficiently (buying longer boards and having the home improvement store cut in half for you), you can have the home improvement store cut all the wood for you as well. Approximate wood cost is $110 for Twin and the bolts are $25. Tools required will be a saw to cut the wood or have the home improvement store do it, a drill with 1/8" bit and a standard socket set. Our ladders are built in. Free standing & structurally sound: Our loftbeds have never been rejected by any University Housing department. Our beds are rock solid, designed by a structural engineer, and require a very basic knowledge of woodworking to assemble. We even offer free phone support if you need a bit of "helpful advice." Guardrail's, shelf, X-braces, built-in ladder: These are just some of the features standard - guardrail's are removable - you will probably need only one side if loftbed is against wall, shelf does NOT overhang mattress - eliminating banging your head, X-braces offer TRUE structural strength, ladder - is built into one side of loftbed for strength, space savings, and it can't be "accidently moved." Total cost of our Loft Bed plans are $5 - $.51 for the plans and $4.49 for the STANDARD Shipping - this is because Amazon has to charge shipping - since we email you the link we have adjusted our normally $5 plan fee so that you pay only $5. Do not select expidited shipping - our link is sent to you within 24 hours of your purchase.

A Life Full of Farewells
Price: $15.98 USD
Simply put, Peter Milton Walsh is a great songwriter. While the first two Apartments albums (The Evening Visits, Drift) show this in abundance, it's here on the third where he simply outdoes himself. A song cycle regarding the dissolution of Walsh's increasingly middle-aged life, Farewells begins with the ultra-catchy "Things You'll Keep," works through the complicated games of love ("The Failure of Love is A Brick Wall") and sweeps through to a sad finale where he remembers his father as an absent dad and dedicated worker sent out to pasture by the world he embraced ("All the Time in the World"). All in less time than it takes to fix a flat. --Rob O'Connor

Joe's Apartment
Price: $9.98 USD
Fresh off the bus from iowa, Joe (Jerry O'Connell) is just trying to make it in New York, but he's got no job, no girl and no place to live. But life changes for Joe as he finds an apartment, along with 50,000 singing, dancing roach roommates who teach
Just what the world needs: an all-musical roach revue. What worked as an MTV short film does not work as a feature-length movie. Intelligent cockroaches with lives of their own may seem outré and amusing on the small screen, but are disgusting and eventually boring when we have to spend 80 long minutes with them. Scruffy Jerry O'Connell is the Iowa farm boy who moves to the Big Apple and rents a filthy, bug-infested flat. Turns out those bugs are his only friends. Also turns out that the animated vermin are a whole lot more interesting than the human cast. This is just silly and gross enough for adolescent boys, or those with adolescent tastes. --Rochelle O'Gorman
