An ad exec and a shower-curtain-ring salesman become co-travelers on the way to thanksgiving in chicago. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 03/22/2005 Starring: Steve Martin Laila Robbins Run time: 93 minutes Rating: R Director: John Hughes
Given the presence of both Steve Martin and John Candy, one would expect this John Hughes comedy to be much, much funnier than it is. Certainly it's not for lack of effort on the part of its stars. Martin is an uptight businessman trying to get home from New York for the holidays. But one thing after another gets in his way--most of it having to do with Candy, a boorish but well-meaning boob who takes a liking to him. Together they travel all over the map; no matter how hard Martin tries to shake him, he can't. But Hughes's writing is never as sharp as it should be and this film winds up being only intermittently humorous. --Marshall Fine

Once viewed as a plaything of the wealthy and eccentric, the car is now an integral part of modern life. The Car takes us on a tour of the many roles that the automobile has played in its lifetime, and the many guise and different models in which it has appeared. Not just a book of glossy advertising shots, The Car is a social history of the impact that cars and driving have had on the world, and nowhere more so than in the United States: freeways, driveins, trucks and trailer parks all spring from the invention of the internal combustion engine

Do you think you could beat a professional basketball player at his own game? For most of us, the answer is no. Think about that the next time you go to a car dealership... where you are dealing with a professional seller. From the moment you step out on the lot you are behind in experience... behind in industry knowledge... behind in salesmanship... to whom else but someone who sells for a living? The professional athlete of his field. The salesman. The person who makes his living by commission - and therefore tries to squeeze every dollar possible out of his victims. But now you can be prepared. Don't fall for his traps. Don't fall for his schemes. Make sure you spend the least money possible when purchasing your car. And do it with confidence now thanks to... "Auto Cons - How To Buy An Automobile Without Getting Scammed!" Are you looking to buy a car but don't want to pay more money then you have to? Then I am your ticket. The first thing you need to realize when going to a dealership to buy a car is this. The salesman's agenda is to make the best commission possible. Your agenda is to get the best deal possible. You must understand this mindset. In the lot of the dealership.. "It's You VS The Salesman!" Most people are too naive to realize what is happening when they are being sold a car. They are not thinking like the salesman, who has been there every single day for the last umpteen years dealing with customers just like them. Most people just aren't up to the challenge. But by golly, that won't be you. Because it's my job to change that. I've written down everything you need to research before you go the dealership. Everything you should bring with you. And written down all the likely lines you might here from the salesman... ...whose sole intention is to get as much money from your bank account as possible. It's all in my thoroughly researched, 30+ page ebook. And you can be reading it in mere minutes from now. But to warm up, here is just SOME of the information you will find inside: * Why you should run if they ask you to resign your loan papers. * Find out the difference between the dealer's price and the factory price - so that you know how much to offer. * Find out when salesmen are desperate to sell cars and are much more willing to lower their prices to close the deal. * Recognize numerous other scams such as the "Factory Holdback Scam," "Insurance Scam," "Turnover Scam," and more. Get prepared before you get taken for thousands. * 8 items to bring with you when purchasing a car if you want to make sure you get the best deal possible. * Recognize who is really on the phone if someone calls in to compete with your offer. * Find out why you should always pay deposits with your credit card - not with checks. * Recognize "Price Beating" and "I Won't Get Paid" scams and learn to stay away. * Why you should never wait until the last minute to buy a car... never! * Find out why you should never offer any money for a car unless you already know the dealer cost. * Understand how you can end up paying thousands more if you let the dealership help you get out making payments on your current cars loan. * Find out when to consider if you should finance your loan through a credit union instead of the dealership. * Learn when to use the words "only if you put it in writing" to save yourself from scams forced on you by pushy salesmen. * Make sure the date that the salesman writes on your contract is correct before signing. I'll tell you why on... * How to protect yourself from late payments when trading in car that still has money due. * Recognize a legal way dealers are able to charge you an extra $500 for doing next to nothing - and how you can avoid it. ..And MUCH MORE!

The postwar era marked the emergence of all things American, and in the 1950s, cars led the way. The brilliant colors, pinks, blues, yellows, and reds, soaring tailfins, and grinning, wide-mouthed grilles of the 1953 Buick Skylark, 1957 Ford Skyliner, 1953 Firebird III, and 1959 Cadillac tore up the country's pristine superhighways and dotted the parking lots of new suburban shopping malls. These and many other striking models, which expressed the national optimism and pride of 1950s America, are featured i this elegant volume of images by renowned automobile photographer Michael Furman. The book contains more than 150 stunning photographs of these motoring icons, many never before published. An informative text and an illustrated index of technical information describe the unique qualities of these spectacular cars, each more imposing in design, size, and power than the preceding models. Furman's technical virtuosity and exacting eye for detail make this unparalleled collection of photographs an eye-popping delight, an invitation for car lovers of all kinds to rediscover an era when the American automobile was king.
Michael Furman is perhaps the most in-demand photographer of automobiles today, and after one peek inside this large, fetishized monument to the great flowering of the auto industry after WW II, it's easy to see why. Huge fins, bright gleaming chrome, and colorfully glowing paint speak of incredible optimism and consumption of natural resources. A swell companion piece to his Motorcars of the Classic Era, Furman is capable of focusing on details that really make a particular car stand out while never losing sight of the importance of the overall design. There are things you totally expect to see here, like the fin from a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville or the deco/ Futurist "angel in flight" hood ornament for the 1947 Nash Ambassador Suburban as well as full side views of the 1951 Buick LeSabre and 1959 Firebird III (which still look like they came from the future for rides to the moon in total comfort). But even the biggest car aficionado will see these immaculately-restored museum quality rides in a different light through the clearly obsessed lens of Furman, whether it be the fin and light detail of the 1956 De Soto Adventurer or the oil cap on a 1959 Fiat Abarth Record Monza Bialbero Zagato! It's hard to think of a better gift for a fan of cars from this era, aside from one of the cars. --Mike McGonigal
