In the late 1960s after a lifetime of perfecting his classic indian motorcycle burt sets off from the bottom of the world invercargill new zealand to clock his bike at the bonneville salt flats in utah. With all odds against him burt puts his irrepressible kiwi spirit to the test braving the new world. Studio: Magnolia Pict Hm Ent Release Date: 12/31/2007 Starring: Anthony Hopkins Bruce Greenwood Run time: 127 minutes Rating: Pg13
A movie that exudes affection and goodwill, The World's Fastest Indian is an unabashed mash note to a lovely character from New Zealand's recent past. Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins, is a cantankerous Kiwi with an obsession: he's been tinkering with his 1920s-era Indian brand motorcycle for years, pushing it to ever-faster speeds. It's the 1960s, and Burt has the utterly mad idea of taking the bike to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, site of world records for speed racing. The movie takes a while to get to the journey--and then the journey takes a while--but the genial atmosphere prevails. (People of a certain age, for whom the word "Bonneville" evokes pleasant associations with hotrods and world-speed records, will not be disappointed in the film's location shooting, or its sense of awe.) Hopkins is not quite on-the-money casting for the jovial, happy-go-lucky Munro, and his accent wavers, but he nails the emotional scenes and the fascination with speed. Smaller bits are well-filled by Diane Ladd and Christopher Lawford (son of Peter), who looks uncannily of the era. New Zealand director Roger Donaldson doesn't take any chances here, but the story clearly means something to him, and that sense of commitment carries the film through its sleepier moments. --Robert Horton

Add a touch of Asian flair to everyday meals with Spode's set of four Indian Red accent plates. A member of the new Home Accents collection, these coordinating 9-inch plates each display intricate Chinese designs (the term "Indian" once referred to all of the Orient) that change from the round serving areas to the wide borders to the edge trim. The iron red and white palette makes a strong and classical statement that becomes even more dramatic against the plates' architecturally shaped rims. Handsome on its own, this set also looks striking with white or black dinnerware for an easy and economical way to add style to plain settings. The plates are crafted of high-quality earthenware with a protective glaze for strength and durability, and they go safely into the dishwasher and microwave. When not in use, the set can be exhibited and enjoyed in an Asian-inspired dining room, on open kitchen shelves, or hanging on the wall. The plates come packaged in a lovely box for giving or storing. --Kara Karll

The touching tale of a nine-year-old boy who magically brings his three-inch toy indian to life. Together they embark on an amazing adventure filled with wonder and excitement. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 04/22/2008 Starring: Hal Scardino Litefoot Run time: 97 minutes Rating: Pg Director: Frank Oz
Young Hal Scardino stars as a sensitive boy who discovers a way to bring plastic toys to life in a locked cupboard. One of those toys, a 19th-century Iroquois warrior (played by actor Litefoot), was actually a real warrior now only several inches tall. A bond eventually develops between boy and warrior, and a six-shooting toy cowboy (David Keith). As with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Indian in the Cupboard (which was written by E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison) is about a magical visitor connecting with a lonely child. But director Frank Oz (In & Out) has made the film far too stiff and dramatically flat to get across the enchantment necessary to make the fantasy work. Watching this is like listening to someone who can't tell a good story to save his life, yet who is trying to captivate your attention and heart. --Tom Keogh

This recording captures the unspoiled purity of the classical Indian flute accompanied by the tamboura. The simple but powerful compositions bring the mind to an exquisite place of stillness, refreshing your whole being and turning the attention within. The flute is masterfully played by venerable V.K. Raman, one of the greatest musicians of classical Indian flute alive today. He not only is an accomplished musician but a yogi who poured his whole heart into the project. The Indian classical flute developed independently from its Western counterparts. Made with bamboo, Indian flutes are keyless. There are two main varieties used--both played in this recording. The first is the Bansuri, used predominantly in Hindustani music. The second is the Venu, which is mostly used in Carnatic style, the music of the South of India. Each track has a different raga improvisation which has the power to soothe the mind and has the power to bring the body to a state of complete calm and relaxation.
