Thou Shalt Laugh
Price: $19.98 USD
Filmed in Hollywood and hosted by Emmy? Award winning actress, Patricia Heaton, ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), it's a night of sidesplitting stand-up comedy from some of the funniest comedians around ? who all just happen to be Christian. Seven comedians including Taylor Mason, Thor Ramsey and Michael Jr., all give witty performances with jokes and stories that poke fun at the daily trials and tribulations we can all relate to. If you're looking for funny, your prayers have been answered!
Christian comics aren't all that different from other comics on Thou Shalt Laugh, a frequently funny, live stage show featuring seven comedians and hosted by Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton. Recent father Thor Ramsey discusses the horrors of trying to unwrap a stuffed toy: "I can only imagine someone wrapping this at a state correctional facility. 'If I’m not going anywhere, you’re not going anywhere.'" Ramsey also discusses the most effective marketing of Jesus, in his opinion: "It’s the fish symbol on bumper stickers. The response to that was the Darwin fish with legs. Our response to that is a bigger fish eating their fish." Michael Jr. explains how subliminal communication works with a new woman he's dating, especially when he's sending signals about not having a fancy car: "If Yugo with me to the Fiesta..." He talks, too, about his position on alternative lifestyles: "Someone asked me, 'Are you pro-gay?' No, I'm not pro-gay. I'm not amateur gay either. I didn't even know they have a league." Fortysomething Jeff Allen gets into domestic bliss: "My father told me one thing about marriage: Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy? I'm a happy, happy, happy man." Teresa Roberts Logan describes her struggle with weight loss: "They tell you to flavor those weight-loss milkshakes with your choice of additives. I added Reese's Peanut Butter Cups." Also on the bill are Gilbert Esquivel, Joby Saad, and Taylor Mason. --Tom Keogh

I'd Rather Laugh: How to be Happy Even When Life Has Other Plans forYou
Price: $19.99 USD
Remember "Coffee Talk," the Saturday Night Live skit with the Barbara Streisand-loving, constantly verklempt character portrayed by Mike Myers, who encouraged listeners to "talk amongst themselves"? Linda Richman was the inspiration for her. (Myers is her son-in-law; a sharp sense of humor apparently runs in the family.) Like the "Coffee Talk" lady, Richman teaches people how to handle suffering through laughter. She's so good at it that she teaches a seminar on the topic at the posh Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Arizona. But she speaks from some harrowing experiences. Several friends and relatives have battled cancer. Her 29-year-old son died in a car crash. Her depressed, institutionalized mother died a few days later after falling into a coma (her final words to her daughter: "Linda, you got fat"). In case you're thinking, "Sheesh, how depressing, who wants to read about that stuff?" think again. Her friend Rosie O'Donnell, who wrote the foreword, raves about "Linda-isms." Richman is a modern-day Norman Cousins, but she talks like your best friend--a very witty, resilient friend--offering an inspiring tribute to the power of humor. (Or is it denial?) Heck, what difference does it make, when Richman's "pity party" has you laughing and crying so hard simultaneously?

By subduing some of his trademark acoustic ferocity, Keller Williams has come up with a markedly more cohesive collection than past efforts. Rather than showcasing the technical wizardry that has earned him acclaim, here Williams melds his formidable skills with Tye North's restrained bass and Dave Watt's unerring drumming to create a more integrated work that backs away from the series of glancing blows and showy displays of instrumental prowess found on some of his earlier works. His stream-of-consciousness lyrics are still intact, but these wry observations and travelogues from the road show a greater depth and insight. The overriding theme here--the importance of honoring one's own eccentricities and remaining psychologically and intellectually free--are best expressed on the rather droll "Alligator Alley," a play on the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," in which he wades deeply into the shoals of paranoia before proclaiming, "I set Willie free / Yeah, that was me." Indeed, his covers further amplify Laugh's keynote theme: both Ani DiFranco's "Freakshow" and the Michael Hedges's "Spring Buds" applaud the importance of following your own path. Which is exactly what Williams intends to do, laughing all the way. --Jaan Uhelszki

Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business Of America
Price: $34.95 USD
Hosted By Billy Crystal & Narrated By Amy Sedaris, 3-DVD Set Presents A 6-Episode Series Chronicling A Century Of America's Funniest Entertainment And Its Most Legendary Comedians!
Who said of war, "When you get into trouble 5,000 miles from your home, you've got to have been looking for it"? Was it Bill Maher? Jon Stewart? Stephen Colbert? Nope; it was Will Rogers, whose good-humored pokes at politicians defined the 1920s and 30s and set the stage for today’s more confrontational Real Time with Bill Maher, The Daily Show, andThe Colbert Report. This through line is what makes Make 'Em Laugh such an enlightening and exhilarating survey of American comedy. This vastly entertaining six-part PBS series explores how comedy has defined the nation's character, and spotlights comedians through the generations who broke the mold, broke the rules, and, in some cases, broke their necks to make us bust a gut. The ambitious Make 'Em Laugh is divided into six episodes, each devoted to a particular genre or style of comedy: "Would Ya Hit a Man with Glasses?: Nerds, Jerks & Oddballs"; "Honey, I'm Home: Breadwinners and Homemakers"; "Slip on a Banana Peel: The Knockabouts"; "When I'm Bad, I'm Better: The Groundbreakers"; and "Sock It To Me: Satire and Parody." Host Billy Crystal contributes some amusing bits to introduce each episode (the best is a pitch-perfect parody of Ken Burns’ stately documentaries). The charmingly off-center Amy Sedaris narrates. Comedy buffs may squawk over some grievous omissions, most heinously Ernie Kovacs, David Letterman, Second City, and SCTV (and don't blame Canada; Jim Carrey, a fellow Great White Norther, rates a segment). But the roster of participants (over 90 comedians, writers, producers, agents, and historians) is staggering, and the clips are not just the same old same old. There is rare footage of Elaine May and Mike Nichols and Tom Lehrer. The series is contemporary enough to include Judd Apatow, Larry David, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. The old masters (Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, and The Three Stooges) get their due, as do the so-called sick and cerebral comedians of the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s (Lenny Bruce, Shelley Berman, Richard Pryor, George Carlin), for whom "getting a laugh and getting at the truth were the same thing." To its credit, Make ‘Em Laugh gives respect to some faded or forgotten clowns, characters, and kidders, including Harold Lloyd, Mae West, Moms Mabley, Phil Silvers, and Alan Sherman. If someone doesn't tickle your fancy, another entertainer will be along shortly. Cultural historians are on hand to explain what it all means, but it's more fun to hear the performers talk about their comedy heroes and inspirations, and how they found their own voices. At one point, satirist Mort Sahl reveals that Milton Berle once gave him a pointed political joke rather than use it himself, and explained to Sahl, "They don’t think I'm smart enough." It may not be a profound statement, but no truer words are spoken in this series than, "There will always be funny people, thank goodness." For future generations of comedians, these people will be a hard act to follow. --Donald Liebenson
