DVD Features:
Documentaries:Drivers' Profiles
Documentary:NASCAR's closest racing moments

Until you've seen NASCAR: The IMAX Experience, you haven't really seen NASCAR. Even without the advantage of a gigantic IMAX screen and 70-millimeter 3-D projection, this 48-minute IMAX film is a perfect primer for newcomers to the sport of stock-car racing. Like all IMAX films it's aimed at a mainstream audience (hardcore NASCAR fans won't learn anything new here), so it covers a broad spectrum of general history, technical information, and pure high-speed adrenaline, from NASCAR's origins in 1947 to the oval-track highlights of the 2003 season. While Lonesome Dove director Simon Wincer captures the action (including some amazing mid-pack and cockpit footage during actual races), Kiefer Sutherland narrates an informative survey of season-long activities, from car building and safety measures at Mooresville, North Carolina, to pit-crew practice, transportation logistics, constant danger and its effect on drivers' wives and families, and the aerodynamics of drafting. Interesting trivia (each tire costs $389!) is included along with driver profiles and a compilation of memorable race finishes, but it's the IMAX footage that makes this a thrill-a-minute DVD, perfect for anyone who's just beginning to enjoy the world's fastest (and fastest-growing) sport. --Jeff Shannon

NASCAR: The Ride of Their Lives
Price: $19.99 USD
A moving and at times, adrenaline-filled journey chronicling the memorable personalities and moments of America?s revered and renowned home-grown sports brand. Narrated by Academy-Award winning actor and director, Kevin Costner, the history of NASCAR is presented via passionate, never-before seen first-person accounts from the people who lived it. Individual stories of loss and redemption highlight the evolution of racers from the moonshiners of the 1950s to the media darlings of the 21st century. The passage of time is strikingly illustrated through archival footage chronicling a half century of Daytona 500 races as well as tales of changes in the competition, the technology, the growing fan-base and the rock-star racers themselves. LIST OF HIGHLIGHTED DRIVERS ? Dale Earnhardt / Dale Earnhardt Jr. / Jeff Gordon / Richard Petty / Kyle Petty / Bobby Allison / Tim Richmond / Wendell Scott / Darryl Waltrip
It will come as no surprise that the coolest stuff in the NASCAR chronicle The Ride of Their Lives is vintage footage of the early days: stock-car geeks racing around on the sand in Daytona Beach, and the 1959 building of the fabled racetrack in that NASCAR capital. The treatment of that era has some of the inventing-the-wheel quality of documentaries such as Dogtown and Z-Boys in its breathlessness about a new subculture and its terrific original footage. There's more to cover in this standard-issue, TV-style history, of course, and the film does an energetic job of tracking the many dynasties that have enlivened the sport: the Pettys, the Allisons, the Earnhardts. Shooting stars such as Tim Richmond (the flashy driver who contracted HIV and died in 1989) and Jeff Gordon (who once hosted Saturday Night Live), and their ability to change the image of NASCAR, are also tracked. The film is intended as a celebration, and isn't a critical take on the sport in any way, but to its credit it does at least allude to the less salutary aspects of NASCAR, including the fans' enthusiasm for the Confederate flag and the rough treatment of pioneering African-American driver Wendell Scott. The narration by Kevin Costner provides a smooth ride for the racing footage, which lavishes attention on some of the most celebrated finishes (and not a few of the most spectacular crashes). New interviews with the likes of Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., fill in the background on the various personalities, feuds, and triumphs that have colored NASCAR's grease-spattered run. --Robert Horton

Getting Ready for the Races
Before the race cars can get rolling, you'll need to assemble the track. The instructions recommend shaping each piece by rolling it and pushing the walls so they stand straight up, and it's worth taking the time to do this because it helps keep cars on track as you start racing.

Snapping the pieces together to make the 180 degree curves is pretty simple. The tricky part of setup is getting the flexible straightaways to connect evenly, but you'll want to be patient and do it well, since having a smooth surface to compete on makes races a lot more fun.

The pit stop recharger is a fun, unique way to keep cars charged. You can put either two or four D cell batteries in it. Using four batteries lets each race car run longer on a single charge. To get your car ready, simply insert the recharger's nozzle into the intake pipe on your car and press down on the top of the charger.

Start Your Engines!
Once the track is set and the cars are charged, all it takes is the flick of switch to start the action. Each car has a convenient on-off switch on the bottom, just behind the rear wheels. Just like real NASCAR racers, once these cars are moving, they don't want to stop. This means that if a bump sends them off the track they're likely to end up flying across your floor or spinning their wheels in the carpet. Since assembling the track smoothly was a bit tricky, we often had to chase down a few renegade cars. However, we also discovered that these durable little cars are incredibly fun to play with on their own without the track.

The Real NASCAR Speedway Experience
The detail on these race cars is sure to impress serious NASCAR enthusiasts, down to the Goodyear logos on the tires. Young racers will pit the popular drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon against each other again and again in an ultimate championship series. Even the hum the cars make when running mimics a real race. But don't worry -- they're not too loud.

With quick little motors and durable bodies, these cars zoom around the track and easily survive crashes. The big track offers super sized fun, even though keeping the connections smooth occasionally gets tricky, and it's easy to keep the racers charged. Overall, these toy cars do a good job of bringing home the action packed competition that makes NASCAR the top spectator sport in the U. S.

What's in the Box
Two race cars, one pit box charger, six curved track pieces, six straight track pieces, and eight connector pieces.
