Show
Price: $11.98 USD
The band's 1993 live album with four bonus tracks that appeared separately in the U.S. on the 'Sideshow' EP: 'Open', 'The Walk', 'Fascination Street' and 'Let's Go To Bed'. 18 tracks total, also featuring 'High', 'Pictures Of You', 'Lullaby', 'Just Like Heaven', 'A Night Like This', 'Friday I'm In Love' and 'Inbetween Days'. Double slimline jewel case. 1993 Fiction release.
The Cure is bombarding us with disposable product: There's Show, the soundtrack from the film of its Detroit stop on the '92 Wish tour; Side Show, an EP of five live tunes not included on Show, and Paris, a different live set recorded in Europe. Considering that much of its reputation rests on Tim Pope's visionary videos, Show (the movie) is a dreadful bore, concentrating exclusively on the band performing, much like Pink Floyd's Live At Pompeii. The soundtrack is just as tedious, skimping on the catchy hits ("Friday I'm in Love" is here, but not "The Love Cats") and dwelling on droning mood pieces such as "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea." Show is for the devoted only, while the other discs are for those devotees who actually go out in public dressed like Fat Bob. --Jim DeRogatis

Taped at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on June 28, 2003, Matchbox Twenty's Show depicts a hard-working rock band in its prime and in its element. The full spectacle of Matchbox Twenty's More Than You Think You Are tour comes across, from the band's world-class lights to its lock-tight playing, recorded and mixed for 5.1-channel surround and shot in gloriously film-like high-definition video under the direction of Hamish Hamilton (Madonna, U2, Jennifer Lopez).

As on record, Matchbox Twenty's acute sensitivity to pop dynamics carries the day, showcasing drummer Paul Doucette's propulsive attacks, lead guitarist Kyle Cook's vocals and fretwork, and the soulful belting of lead singer-songwriter Rob Thomas. (The less said of Thomas's occasional piano playing, the better.) The concert itself is free from interview footage and other distractions, and the 45-minute documentary included on disc 2 is candid and focused, revealing the effort required to mount and execute an arena tour.

Dolby Digital 5.1 is the best way to hear the concert, even if you collapse it to stereo, as the Dolby 2.0 tracks are marred by matrixed SRS Circle Surround 5.1 encoding. The presence of the SRS processing is confusing, given the superior Dolby-only sound and the broad household penetration of Dolby-based AV receivers. Alas, there's no DTS surround mix (as advertised in print) or CD-quality PCM stereo mix. --Michael Mikesell

That '70s Show - Season One
Price: $39.98 USD
Crank up the 8-track and flash back to the "me" decade…That ‘70s Show is now shaking its groove thing on DVD! Set in the era of Led Zeppelin, Tab cola and Farrah Fawcett posters, this hilarious sitcom starring Ashton Kutcher recently celebrated its 100th episode and continues to delight fans with its nostalgic references and funny, slice-of-life storylines about growing up in the ‘70s.
Long before Ashton met Demi or Topher got lost in Traffic, the makers of Third Rock from the Sun stepped into the Wayback Machine and emerged with That '70s Show. It would go on to become the Fox Network's most successful sitcom since Married... with Children. Set in the Wisconsin suburbs of 1976, the action centers around 17-year-old Eric Forman (Topher Grace), his friends, and his family. He's an ordinary teenager, much like the slackers of Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused, with an interest in girls, cars, beer, and rock & roll (but not necessarily in that order).

Eric's friends include hipster Hyde (Danny Masterson), exchange student Fez (Wilmer Valderrama), and dim-bulb Kelso (Ashton Kutcher). Donna (Lora Prepon), Eric's neighbor, is also a friend, but she'll soon become something more, while Kelso already has a girlfriend, the bossy Jackie (Mila Kunis)--and a crush on Eric's sister Laurie (Lisa Robin Kelly). Kelso and Jackie will spend a good part of the first year breaking up just to make up, while Hyde pines for Donna and Fez for Jackie. Eric's family also includes father Red (Kurtwood Smith) and mother Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp). Donna's includes mother Midge (former Bond girl Tanya Roberts) and perm-sporting father Bob (Don Stark).

The first season boasts a period-perfect bevy of guest stars, including Danny Bonaduce ("Eric's Burger Job"), Eve Plumb ("The Keg"), and Marion Ross as Eric’s grandmother ("Sunday, Bloody Sunday" and other episodes). That said, if That '70s Show were just a nostalgia trip, it wouldn't have lasted for over seven seasons. Alas, lightning wouldn’t strike twice. When the same producers followed-up with That '80s Show a few years later, it would soon disappear without a trace. Accept no substitutes: That '70s Show is the real deal--a retro-comedy, like Happy Days, with heart. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
