In The Wasted Vigil, Nadeem Aslam, the award-winning author of Maps for Lost Lovers, brilliantly knits together five seemingly unconnected lives to create a luminous story set in contemporary Afghanistan.
There’s Marcus, an English expat who was married to an outspoken Afghani doctor; David, a former American spy; Lara, from St. Petersburg, looking for traces of her brother, a Russian soldier who disappeared years before; Casa, a young Afghani whose hatred of the Americans has plunged him into the blinding depths of zealotry; and James, an American Special Forces soldier. Aslamreveals the intertwining paths that these characters have traveled, constructing a timely and intimate portrait of the complex ties that bind us and the wars that continue to tear us apart. A man climbs down a dangerous ravine to rescue a stranded sheep as a young girl wrapped in heavy clothing and a hooded stocking cap looks on. She's the man's daughter, 12-year-old Toss (played with a mix of ease and intensity by Fiona Kay), and when she suddenly drops her eyes in shock and sadness we know he's fallen to his death. The setting of Vincent Ward's first film is an isolated sheep farm in the hills of New Zealand, a hard, primeval, almost timeless world surrounded by an omnipresent fog that envelops the farm like an island. A bearded stranger, a dark, terse character named Birdie (Bill Kerr), is hired to help out on the farm, much to the disdain of widowed Elizabeth (Penelope Stewart), devastated and worn emotionally raw by the hard life. She simply wants to sell the place and get away, but her conflict with Birdie brings them to an inevitable collision. Moody and portentous, it's a slow-moving film with little dramatic action but rich in vivid imagery and thick with mood. In many ways, it seems like a dry run for Ward's follow-up, The Navigator, an even more visually impressive film that mixes the medieval and the modern as seen through the eyes of a child. --Sean Axmaker

A heart-wrenching story of sacrifice and devotion, While Ana waits at her beloved's deathbed, she thinks back on her life and the incredible journey that brought her to this unlikely place. Ana's story takes her from war-torn El Salvador, to a convent in the United States, and finally to a wealthy California estate where she is employed as the nanny for a dysfunctional family caught up in the throes of a decadent life. Despite her own emotional wounds, she is able to bring love and healing to her affluent yet spiritually bereft employers -- gifts that no money could ever buy. In the course of Samartin's work as a psychotherapist, she has been awed by those rare individuals who, after having endured unimaginable trauma, not only survive, but flourish. Her work is inspired by those unique and courageous people who are able to turn personal tragedy into profound inner strength that has the power to transform those around them. Vigil is the story of one such woman and the family that she sets her heart on saving. Readers will be spellbound by Vigil's magical language and provocative themes; this is Samartin's most impressive work yet. Author: Cecilia Samartin
